Animal Sanctuaries

We are 15 life-long friends, all vegan animal-lovers who moved to Costa Rica in 2005. We established a non-profit, no-kill charitable organization founded on the belief that all animals deserve respectful and loving treatment and must be protected by humans as well as by law.

Whenever we came across animals who are abused, abandoned, sick or injured, we take action to prevent further suffering and give them a safe and loving home.

The Sloth Institute (TSI)’s mission is to enhance and expand the welfare and conservation of sloths.

The Sloth Institute has a 3 pronged approach to realizing its vision:

1) RESEARCH of captive, wild and recently released sloths including collaborations with conservationists and scientists around the world

2) EDUCATION to generate and disseminate responsible information about sloths

3) CONSERVATION programs that negate human encroachment issues impacting sloths welfare and habitat.

At the Costa Rica Animal Rescue we are dedicated to protect and help endangered Costa Rican wildlife with all means available to us. Our first and foremost goal is to ensure the welfare of the animals at the center and help them recover from both, physical and psychological wounds that have arisen from their past suffering.

Since many animals become victims of abuse in the tourism sector or illegal pet trade, we want to raise awareness about their mistreatment. Our work is our way of leading the change to more animal welfare and a sustainable way of living in coexistence with wildlife.

The Jaguar Rescue Center is a temporary or permanent home for ill, injured and orphaned animals. With a focus on monkeys, sloths, other mammals, birds and reptiles, the JRC provides veterinary services, round-the-clock care and comfort to animals that would otherwise be unable to survive in the rainforest or the waters of the Caribbean.

Tree of Life Wildlife Rescue Center & Botanical Gardens was an organization that did not receive any governmental funding. This meant that donations and admission sales helped the rescue center stay a home to all of its animals. Helped to support in caring for the animals and maintaining the park facilities.

We Nurture Distressed Animals Back To Health & Reintroduce Them Back To The Wild

Tucked away just walking distance from the hotel, lies the Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary. Here you will be able to experience a rich variety of the amazing wildlife Costa Rica has to offer. The Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary is a non-profit organization and every person that steps through our doors is helping rescue, feed, give necessary veterinary care, and so much more.

Sibu Wildlife Sanctuary’s mission is to provide a permanent, spacious sanctuary and ongoing care for wildlife that, due to psychological or physical injury, it is not possible to release back into the wild.

Physical injury to Costa Rica’s wildlife is most often caused by human encroachment. Deforestation, development and fragmentation of their natural habitat has led to frequent electrocutions on power lines, dog attacks and injury or death due to fast moving motor vehicles.
